Sandwell Council awards Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust the Freedom of the Borough

Sandwell Council has awarded Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust the Freedom of the Borough.

The award was made during an event on Wednesday 11 December as part of Sandwell’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

This prestigious honour is a recognition of the extraordinary commitment, dedication and resilience shown by all those who work within the NHS, from doctors and nurses to support staff, paramedics and volunteers. Over the years, the NHS has not only been the backbone of our healthcare system but also a beacon of compassion, selflessness and unwavering service to the people of this country.

The Mayor of Sandwell, Councillor Syeda Khatun MBE, said: “We are honouring the NHS’s extraordinary service, not only in times of crisis, but as a constant source of support, healing and care to the residents of Sandwell. Freedom of the Borough is one of the highest honours we can bestow, and it is only fitting that the NHS, an institution so integral to our lives, receives this recognition.”

She continued: “I am pleased that we are joined by staff from the Trust from many varying roles, such as cleaning service, medical engineer, catering, logistics, maternity, transfer nursing to name but a few.”

Rachel Barlow, Managing Director for the Midland Met Programme Company at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, who attended the event, added: “The Trust is honoured to be awarded the Freedom of the Borough by Sandwell Council, in recognition of the work the NHS does to serve and care for our local community. It recognised both our organisation’s response to the COVID pandemic and the opening of the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick in October.

“It was inspiring to meet partners and councillors at the event with a joint ambition to improve the lives of Sandwell people. We joined local business leaders and voluntary organisations uniting around that shared vision. I heard some amazing personal stories and enjoyed talking with partners about local regeneration as well as diversity and inclusion. I was struck by the strength of pride and local innovation.  It was a fantastic evening and I’m so proud of our organisation and our staff and would like to thank them for all they do.”
