Annie Lennard Primary School has officially opened their sensory room at their school site in Smethwick.
The sensory room is a specially designed space aimed to stimulate the senses, promoting de-escalation and/or encouraging engagement and give pupils an immersive experience. Sensory experiences can be hugely beneficial to children. They are great for promoting a range of developmental skills. These spaces are ideal for creating engaging experiences where the users are surrounded by imagery, scents and sounds to capture the imagination, enhanced by the latest sensory technology.
The school, rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted, opened in 1954 and is named after Mrs Annie Elizabeth Lennard J.P, Mayor of Smethwick 1952 – 1953.
Natalie Crozier, headteacher at Annie Lennard Primary school, said: “Since becoming headteacher in 2015, it’s been my mission to upgrade the school and provide the amazing pupils of Annie Lennard with the resources and equipment they need and deserve. The sensory room is the latest project.
“It was decided collectively by staff that we needed an area to benefit the wellbeing and mental health of our pupils.
“We are already seeing a benefit with some of our pupils who have sensory needs they are able to have regular slots as part of their personalised timetables. We are also seeing a positive impact on older students who might need some time, it provides a tranquil and mindful place for them to be.”
The new room was officially opened by Michael Jarrett, Sandwell Council’s Director of Children and Education. Michael is a former pupil of Annie Lennard Primary School and was delighted to be asked to return.
He said: “I was delighted to return to Annie Lennard Primary School and honoured to be asked to open the new sensory room.
“The school has changed a lot since I was a pupil. The sensory room is a great addition to the school and will benefit the pupils and creates a calm and tranquil place for children.”
The room, Rogman’s Retreat, is dedicated to our recently retired Deputy Head teacher and in memory of her late husband who both taught for many years at the school.
