Sandwell Council marks International Women’s Day

Sandwell is marking International Women’s Day by celebrating victim-survivors of domestic abuse who can inspire others to get the help and support they need to be free of domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of age, background, gender, religion, sexuality or ethnicity. However, statistics show most domestic abuse is carried out by men and experienced by women.

The protection and promotion of women’s rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment, as well as the fight against all forms of discrimination and violence against women, girls and children, are key priorities in the Tackling Violence Against Women And Girls Strategy published by the government in summer 2021.

In Sandwell there is help and support available if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse.

Here are some anonymous testimonies of survivors of domestic abuse:

“Your service has helped when every other professional told me my case was too complex. I am able to process my emotions a lot better since receiving help from BCWA. I am able to think before I act which I was unable to do before.”

“You have made me feel like myself again. When I first came into service and was supported by Michelle she planted the seed inside me. I was worried about changing support workers because I didn’t know if I would be able to trust you. I know I can. I feel like I have blossomed by continuing the support with you. I listen to all the advice you give me and it really helps.”

“You have given me so much and you gave me the courage to go to court I couldn’t have done that without you”

Councillor Kerry Carmichael, leader of Sandwell Council, said: “Domestic abuse is unacceptable and anyone suffering from this should know that this is not their fault and that help is available 24/7 at any time of year. I hope that the words of those that experienced domestic abuse and managed to overcome it can be an inspiration for anyone currently in a similar situation.”

Councillor Bob Piper, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for community safety, said: “Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, and anyone can be an abuser. Sandwell Council works with a range of partners throughout the year to help those experiencing domestic abuse. If domestic abuse is happening to you, it’s important that that you tell someone – you don’t have to wait for an emergency situation to find help.”
